DHHS INTERPRETING SERVICES BOOKING PROCEDURES

DHHS provides sign language interpreting services under two payment models:
Fee for Service and Funding from Grants. DHHS attempts to secure payment under the Fee for Service model first. If that attempt is unsuccessful, DHHS can refer to the funding contracts to determine if the appointment type can be covered.

1.Fee for Service
•DHHS requires pre-approval from the organization paying for interpreting.
•At the request of a Deaf consumer, DHHS can contact an organization to determine if they will pay for interpreting services. To do so, the Deaf consumer must provide all relevant contact information and reference numbers to validate the appointment.
•Alternatively, the Deaf consumer can request that the organization paying for interpreting services contact a DHHS Booking Coordinator directly.
•Fee for Service Booking Examples:
i.Workplace meetings
ii.Alberta hospital appointments covered by Alberta Health Care
iii.Government department appointments
•When pre-approval has been secured, DHHS will attempt to book an Interpreter and inform both the Deaf consumer and service organization of the details.

2.Funding from Grants
•DHHS has contracts in place to provide limited funding for interpreting services as dictated by those contracts.
•In order to fulfill our contractual obligations for increased accountability, DHHS requires that all bookings be made by the Deaf consumer or the hearing service provider.
•DHHS cannot accept bookings made by Sign Language Interpreters without verification from the Deaf consumer. This includes repeat bookings.
•Examples of appointments that may be eligible for coverage under DHHS funding contracts:
i.Family doctor appointments covered by Alberta Health Care
ii.Lawyer Appointments
iii.Contract signing situations
•If an appointment can be covered under a funding contract, DHHS will attempt to book an Interpreter and inform that Deaf consumer of the details.

To request a Sign Language Interpreter, please contact a DHHS Booking Coordinator directly and include the following information:

Date, Time and Location of appointment
Contact person’s phone and fax number
