DO YOU HAVE HEARING LOSS?

Symptoms of hearing loss:

• Turning up the TV or radio louder than others
• Asking your spouse, family or friends to repeat frequently
• Thinking everyone is mumbling
• Avoiding activities because you can’t hear

What to do if you experience some of these symptoms:

1) Arrange to have your hearing examined by an Audiologist
a) ask for a referral from your family Doctor (waiting time is approximately 4-6 months), or arrange a test through a private Audiology clinic-there is typically a small fee)
2. If you have hearing loss, you should consider trying hearing aids recommended by your Audiologist
a. There are several types of hearing aids and devices and several financial support programs available for seniors of all income levels. Your audiologist as well as your community support programs can help you find financial application to help you.

IN SOME CASES THE ENTIRE COST OF HEARING AIDS MAY BE COVERED

Assistive devices such as amplified telephones, alarm clocks, speechreading (lipreading) courses, Tinnitus information etc. may also be of help and are available at the Deaf & Hard of Hearing Society (DHHS).

Research shows that hearing loss is very common in seniors and that on average; individuals take between 5-7 years to do something about their hearing loss. Don’t delay though, as research supports better success with improving your hearing the sooner that you treat the hearing loss.

Speechreading Course

We provide classes designed to teach hard of hearing individuals Speechreading, which is lip-reading and a variety of additional communication strategies. The classes are held every spring and fall. Trained hard of hearing instructors demonstrate how to reduce the stress and frustration encountered in difficult listening situations.

The next sessions are scheduled for Fall, 2013.

All classes will run for 10 weeks.

Elementary School Presentations

Noise pollution is the number one cause of hearing loss today. Our hard of hearing presenters take a proactive approach to the prevention of noise induced hearing loss. Elementary students learn about the dangers of loud noise and the importance of proper hearing protection.

Public Presentations & Displays

DHHS offers hearing loss awareness presentations to community groups, retirement residences, health & wellness fairs and businesses. A hard of hearing presenter will offer personal insights into how a person learns to cope with this “invisible” disability. As a result, participants gain a better understanding of the needs of the hard of hearing. The session usually includes demonstrating listening devices and hand-outs may also be provided.

Length is 1 hour but can be adjusted to suit the organization.

Cost: Honorarium based on the type and size of organization presenting to.
